During February the Madrid region becomes the contemporary art capital of the world with a wide-ranging cultural offering. The Autonomous Community, the City Council and Metro de Madrid have joined forces in the Mirarte en Madrid campaign, which includes the distribution of 100,000 copies of a map with information on the activity offered by the fairs, galleries, art centres, exhibition halls and museums between 15-19 February.
Cooperation projects between public institutions and private promoters have succeeded in making
February in Madrid a red-letter month on the international contemporary art calendar. For several
years, ArcoMadrid, the leading art fair in Spain and one of the most important in the world, has
coincided with other salons associated with Contemporary Art, which, far from tending to exclude,
have proved to be complementary. For this reason Mirarte en Madrid came into being in 2010.
A campaign is going to be launched in Metro under the slogan Mirarte en Madrid, the largest
Contemporary Art exhibition, inviting users of the transport network to visit the fairs and
exhibitions, all connected up by means of the Underground. The hoardings will be accompanied by the
distribution of a fold-out brochure showing the locations of the four fairs that will fill Madrid
with innovative artistic proposals (ArcoMadrid, Art Madrid, Flecha and JustMad3) and over 130
exhibitions at 72 galleries.
The veteran ArcoMadrid Fair will be held from 15-19 February at the Madrid Trade Fair Centre;
Art Madrid will take place from 16-19 at the Pabellón de Cristal in the Casa de Campo; and for its
part Flecha opens its doors to the public and will remain at the Arturo Soria Plaza Shopping Centre
until 26 February. Concluding the programme of art fairs is JustMad3, which will be held from 16-19
February at Hotel Silken Puerta de América
In this month of February the Vice-Presidency and Secretariat of Culture will be present at
ArcoMadrid with the Community stand devoted this year to publications. The Centro de Arte Dos de
Mayo (CA2M) houses an exhibition by Gregor Schneider and another by Aernout Mik. The intention of
the Madrid City Council Arts Area is to extend the presence of ArcoMadrid all over the city through
the AfterArco programme, an initiative that will act as a meeting point and as a means for
spreading the Fair all round Madrid.
During these dates and as part of the AfterArco programme too, the artist Nico Munuera will
be illuminating the Palacio de Cibeles from 12-19 February and artists from The Netherlands will be
offering video art projections on the Callao screens from 15-19 February.
