Founded in 1885, the UITP is the worldwide association of urban and regional public transport
operators. Its headquarters are located in Brussels and it has 3,000 associate members, whose main
purpose is to promote Public Transport.
The UITP provides information and carries out studies and analyses relating to all aspects of
Public Transport, including infrastructures, rolling stock, organization and management.
The UITP assists the study of every aspect of mobility, in order to increase and promote the
effectiveness and appeal of public transport services and obtain greater benefits with new
technologies and new management methods.
It also defends the interests of its members in negotiations with international authorities
and requests the support of political authorities to achieve a favourable climate of opinion.
Metro de Madrid is a full member, with representation in the various Committees,
Subcommittees and Working Groups.
