The Latin-American Association of Underground Networks and Subways (ALAMYS, Asociación
Latinoamericana de Metros y Suburbanos) was created in response to the need to pool the concerns
and experiences of the metropolitan railway sector. Although it was preceded by other international
organizations of a similar nature, ALAMYS sought to go further by paying attention to the
similarities among its members, owing to their specific technical characteristics as well as their
geographical provenance.
An agreement signed on 27th November 1986 gave rise one year later to a meeting held in
Caracas, where ALAMYS was officially founded. Organizations from Latin-America and the Iberian
Peninsula with metropolitan rail passenger transport systems, as well as companies and associations
engaged in related activities, were invited to participate in the organization of the new
Association.
ALAMYS’s founding document clearly stated its altruistic objectives of technological
exchange and the pooling of experiences among its members, with the aim of helping to increase
productivity, the optimization of resources, and the modernization of infrastructures and
management methods; all of this for the ultimate purpose of improving services for passengers, one
of the key factors in determining their quality of life in large cities.
The success of the Association is reflected in the growing number of Members, of which there are
currently 39 Principal Members, 66 Adherent Members and 5 Honorary Members.
The Principal Members are public or private companies based in the countries of Latin-America
and the Iberian Peninsula who construct and/or operate public transport systems, as well as
Transport Authorities who operate, regulate or manage infrastructures in these geographical areas.
The Adherent Members are urban or suburban transport organizations and suppliers of goods and
services for public metropolitan rail transport systems who carry out their activity in any of the
countries of the Principal Members, as well as companies or associations engaged in related
activities. There are currently 66 Adherent Members.
Finally, the Honorary Members of ALAMYS are individuals or organizations who, due to their
significant merits and achievements in the field of technology, design, construction, operation and
administrative management in relation to this sector, are deserving of such a high distinction.
The Presidency, the legal representative of the Association, has been held by the Managing Director
of Metro de Madrid since November 2003, while the post of Secretary-General, whose office takes
care of coordination and liaison among the members and supports the execution of the activities
corresponding to each level of the Association, has been occupied by the company’s Deputy
Director since 2001.
Metro de Madrid actively participates in the work carried out by the four Technical
Committees: Planning, Management, Operation and Maintenance, as well as by the various Work Groups
that have been set up, and acts as the Assistant Coordinator of the Management Committee, as well
as the Coordinator of the Marketing Work Group, which was created in 2008.
The company’s contributions to the meetings and events organized by ALAMYS, especially
the Meetings of the Technical Committees and the General Assemblies, have always highlighted the
quality of the work carried out, enriching the debate and exchange of experiences, and reinforcing
Metro de Madrid’s brand image worldwide.
The collaboration agreements established with other Associations and groups in the sector offer
opportunities for mutual enrichment through participation in other events and activities, guarantee
the exchange of experiences and the dissemination of information, and extend the network of
contacts to other branches of the sector and other geographical areas.
