SA2VE is a Ministry of Education-funded project included in the National Plan for Scientific
Research, Development and Technological Innovation (R+D+I 2004-2007), in the part devoted to
promoting technical research for singular and strategic scientific-technological projects.
This project aims to develop a kinetic energy storage technology that will be applied to
three sectors of very high potential interest: railway transport applications, energy management in
construction, and quality of electricity supply. Three subprojects have been developed to cover
each one of these potential applications.
The project’s common goal is to fully develop a kinetic energy storage technology. Most
of the technologies involved in kinetic storage systems have already been developed by some of the
participants with satisfactory results. In order to broaden their application by making them
universal, certain requirements need to be met:
• Scalability: The system must be able to grow, especially in energy, without severe
limitations
• Robustness: It must reduce maintenance operations to a minimum
• Economy: It must permit storage at competitive prices
• Effectiveness: The objectives must be achieved without causing additional problems
At the same time, it is necessary to explore new solutions at a more basic level in order to
ensure the continuity of the developments as it becomes possible to incorporate new technologies
into these systems, as in the case of superconducting levitation, multilevel converters or storage
with supercondensers.
In the process of achieving the general objectives of the SA2VE project, Metro de Madrid and,
in particular, the Installations and Works Engineering Unit, forms an integral part of the
FERRO_SA2VE subproject together with seven other companies.
FERRO_SA2VE is aimed at manufacturing a prototype that incorporates the TECNO_SA2VE
developments with stationary railway sector applications, including trains and metros. In parallel
with this development, a high-capacity limited output energy storer prototype will be constructed
for onboard or fixed applications with the aim of starting to develop an incipient technology with
good prospects in these applications.
The main objectives of this Subproject are:
• To develop a stationary kinetic storage system prototype.
• To develop a prototype of a mobile or fixed electrostatic storage system that will be
installed on board trains or in stationary installations.
According to the state of progress of the project, the necessary prototype lab tests are
expected to finish by the end of 2009. Subsequently, the prototypes will undergo tests in ADIF and
METRO DE MADRID installations, after which the technical conclusion reports will be prepared,
leading to the completion of the project in 2010.
The SA2VE project has an official web page www.sa2ve.es that includes all the information
about the project and all the subprojects.
