Metro de Madrid has carried out an ambitious renovation plan on its oldest lines.
Metro de Madrid has made great efforts in order to increase the transport capacity,
comfort and safety of passengers using the network. In particular this has been achieved through
improvements to the existing signalling systems and by the redistribution of energy in order to
reduce the time between trains and to increase the number of trains in operation.
Within the actions undertaken in 2004, priority was given to eliminating architectural
barriers and, therefore, 82 lifts have been installed on different lines in the old network. In
addition, 10 lifts, most of which were operated hydraulically, have been replaced by electric ones.
The present signalling system is also currently being substituted on various lines for a
latest generation system that will make it possible to increase train frequencies, in order to
increase the capacity they have under the present operating conditions.
