Metro in your school
Metro reaches many places, including a lot of schools to which the underground offers training in the responsible use of its network and the advantages of this form of transport. Today, at Crazy About Metro, we show you the AulaMetro programme, our proposal to support students in Madrid in the development of their mobility skills, as well as our latest projects.
We begin with the opening this week of a new educational space at the Canillejas Logistics Centre, which was visited by a group of students from the CEIP El Trigal in Fuenlabrada. The new space joins the existing AulaMetro spaces located in Nuevos Ministerios (lines 6, 10 and 8) and El Bercial (L12).
Let's go to the first of its two new activities: Profesiones con futuro. It is aimed at 3rd and 4th year ESO and Baccalaureate students and aims to inspire them to choose their educational pathway. The programme includes the special testimony of female underground workers who have stood out for their careers in the company and who, with this, wish to encourage, especially young women, to opt for degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and vocational training in electronics, mechanics, computer science and communications.
The second initiative is called Metro por dentro and its mission is to raise awareness of the importance of logistics for the smooth running of the network. Through the viewing of an explanatory video, a tour of the central warehouses and a workshop, schoolchildren can learn, in a playful way, about the importance of this planning that enables the underground to store and transport goods on its trains.
AulaMetro was created over 40 years ago to raise awareness among young people about the benefits of public transport and the importance of Metro de Madrid from a historical, technological and sustainability point of view. The activities for the 2024-2025 academic year began on 30 September, aimed at public, subsidised and private schools in the Community of Madrid in Primary Education, Compulsory Secondary Education (Educación Secundaria Obligatoria, ESO), Baccalaureate, Vocational Training (Formación Profesional, FP) and/or similar, universities, as well as Special Education Centres (Centros de Educación Especial, CEE) of Compulsory Basic Education (Educación Básica Obligatoria, EBO), Training Workshops (Talleres Formativos, TF) and Occupational Centres for Training, Opportunities and Labour Insertion (Centros Ocupacionales de Formación, Oportunidades e Inserción Laboral, COFOIL).
Over the last academic year alone, AulaMetro trained almost 4,000 students from all educational stages. It has 12 educational itineraries, among which two stand out: Cuidamos el planeta (We look after the planet) and Aprendemos a viajar solos (We learn to travel on our own), aimed at primary schoolchildren, in which more than 3,000 pupils took part. These activities are very well received, given that 97% of the schools rate them as good or very good and 100% recommend them in the quality survey carried out. The actions that arouse most interest are those aimed at primary schoolchildren, which account for more than 62% of the places allocated.
On the other hand, in higher education, secondary education, vocational training and university degrees, the programme seeks to convey the importance of the underground from a historical, technological and sustainability point of view. Through visits to our work and museum spaces, students have the opportunity to see the contribution of this public company to the economic and social development of the region, as well as to learn about the infrastructure from a more technical point of view.
Finally, schools participating in AulaMetro, including special education schools, receive courses that are adapted to the interests and needs of their students. Thus, training sessions and gymkhanas have been held for people with intellectual disabilities or comprehension problems, with the aim of promoting their autonomy to travel on the public transport network. These activities, which were attended by nearly 400 people, are also part of the Support Line for the Reinforcement of Autonomy (Línea de Apoyo para el Refuerzo de la Autonomía, LARA).
AulaMetro has a wide variety of informative material such as the video that this Crazy About Metro illustrates today, called Metro te ayuda a crecer (Metro helps you grow). With this video, schoolchildren learn about what Metro is, the history of the company and its advantages. And all this is told in a dynamic and attractive way.
