Can you imagine arriving at the Metro and accessing the platform by simply tapping your card or mobile phone on the turnstile? From 1 June, this everyday gesture will become a new way to travel on the network. You will be able to pay directly for the single ticket by bank card, an innovation that will speed up entry to the underground network and reduce waiting times, especially at peak times. In total, 1,249 turnstiles will be prepared for this system. You will see them signposted.

The novelty is as simple as it is useful: you will be able to validate your trip with credit or debit cards, either in physical format or integrated into your mobile or smart watch, thanks to contactless technology. No queues at the machines, no intermediate steps: arrive, tap and enter. The new system also comes at a particularly busy year for the city. Major events such as the visit of Pope Leo XIV in June or the Formula 1 Grand Prix in September will test the responsiveness of public transport. With this initiative, Metro is taking a step forward to handle that demand more smoothly and without crowding in station halls.

In addition to bank payments, all entrances will be equipped with turnstiles capable of reading QR codes, thereby expanding travel options and adapting to current digital habits. And best of all: the system will coexist with the Public Transport Card and other standard tickets, allowing each user to choose how to get around.

This initiative is part of Component 6, “Sustainable, Safe, and Connected Mobility,” Investment 4 of the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded by Next Generation funds.
