The first IT equipment to arrive at Metro de Madrid was the NEAT 315 from NCR, installed in 1968. Its size and weight were huge and hence the floor at the site had to be reinforced before installing it.

The 1970s saw increased efficiency for users. In 1970, the first ticket machines were installed, and in 1974, turnstiles were installed on the brand new line 7. A year later, they could be seen in all the stations in the underground system.

In 2003, contactless technology arrived to our passes and tickets. In 2012, the rechargeable Multi Card came into service and in 2017 a commitment to the future was made by eliminating magnetic tickets, to enhance efficiency and security.

Since its birth in 1919, Metro de Madrid has been fully electric. Its energy saving in three years is equivalent to that of 110,000 homes in just one. In order to reduce the cost and foster energy regeneration, the Energy Saving Plan was designed in 2012.
