The Arroyo Fresno Metro station will open its doors during the first quarter of 2019

Today Gonzalo visited the works to observe the progress for the start-up of service by what is going to be the underground network’s station number 302. The new infrastructure will be 100 % accessible for people with reduced mobility. The neighbourhoods of Valdezarza, El Pilar, Peñagrande, Lacoma and Arroyo Fresno, with a total of more than 220,000 residents, will be the principal beneficiaries

The new Arroyo Fresno Metro station will open its doors to underground users during the first quarter of 2019. The Head of the Department of Transport, Housing and Infrastructure of the Community of Madrid, Rosalía Gonzalo, made this announcement during her visit today to verify the progress being made in the work for putting this station into service.  Arroyo Fresno will become the Madrid underground’s 302nd station, and its installations will be 100 % accessible for people with reduced mobility.

The Head of Transport highlighted the fact that, with this project, the extension of Line 7 of the underground to Valdezarza and Peñagrande will have been finally completed.  This extension was included in the 1999 Metro de Madrid Expansion Plan for meeting the mobility needs of Valdezarza, El Pilar, Peñagrande, Lacoma and Arroyo Fresno, outlying neighbourhoods in the northeast area of the capital city, home to more than 220,000 people.

The Arroyo Fresno station, located between the Lacoma and Pitis stations, was included in that project. However, the lack of consolidation of the neighbourhood which had given its name to the station at the time of its construction, with practically no nearby buildings or residents and therefore with no demand for public transport services, rendered it advisable to postpone the start-up of service.

The structure of the station was finalised during the initial project and now, with the development of the neighbourhood fully underway with several housing complexes soon to be delivered to their occupants, the station is being readied for its opening to the public. The work units being carried out at the present time involve: the construction of the accesses to the station and its emergency exits, the interior architecture work, the energy distribution, the vertical transport, communications, signalling, ticket machines and turnstiles, the ventilation and cooling, the fire protection and station control, as well as the adaptation of the rolling stock.

In addition, to ensure full accessibility to all of the installations, three lifts will be provided (one on street level and another two for accessing the platforms from the entrance turnstile area) and eight escalators.  Moreover, part of the original project has been modified in order to level the accesses and comply with the most recent regulations introduced in this context.
