Regional Government of Madrid celebrates centenary of Metro with a series of live performances in different stations

Metro Vibra
Flamenco, lyrical, pop and Latin music are just some of the musical styles that can be heard at the concerts. ‘Metro vibra’ [Metro rocks] will perform seven musical styles at seven stations to highlight the links between culture and music. The series will begin today with a flamenco performance at Paco de Lucía station, on the fifth anniversary of his death

The Regional Government of Madrid, as part of the events organised on the occasion of the centenary of Metro, has scheduled a series of live music performances entitled ‘Metro Vibra’, with concerts that will take place once a month until August at seven different stations to bring music to underground users. The Regional Councillor for Transport, Housing and Infrastructure, Rosalía Gonzalo, who presented the musical performances on Monday morning, explained that “the aim is to flood the network stations with the sound of different styles and for passengers to enjoy the music during these short concerts”.

Performances will be put on twice a day (morning and afternoon) at stations, with music ranging from flamenco to pop, lyrical, rock and Latin music. The first performance will be held at Paco de Lucia station, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the death of the artist whose name the station takes. The flamenco group Dúo Sonanta will, with their extensive repertoire, give this concert and offer a very different note to users travelling on the underground.

The next concert, to be held in March, will be lyrical and performed in Ópera station, where the soprano Estíbaliz Martyn, who has already performed in the Royal Theatre, situated just above ground, will delight all lovers of this musical style. In April, the rock group Psychedelic Lemon will surprise passengers with their performance at Moncloa station, where young and old alike can listen to their latest work ‘En tu casa’ first-hand.

On a different note, in May, the cello and guitar of Marisa Gómez and the cello player and composer Gaspar Cassadó, who make up the group Boccherini Dúo, will be commissioned with filling Callao station with music.

In June, it will be the turn of another duo from Madrid - Damy Soul, who will fill Canal station with music, with a wide-ranging repertoire of soul, bossa-nova and adaptations of current jazz themes. And in the following month – in July – Latin and rumba sounds will pervade Embajadores station at the hand of the guitarist, singer-songwriter Lex, who will set the tone for passengers on this central line.

The perfect finale of this series of concerts will be the pop concert held in Nuevos Ministerios station in August by the Madrid artist Dear Leo, a former contestant on the programme ‘La Voz’.

Through ‘Metro Vibra’, Metro wishes to celebrate and remind its users of its centenary, although these are not the first musical performances to be held in stations. Over the course of its history, the underground system has hosted many other cultural events.

Concerts and musical events held in the Madrid underground system have always been well received by Metro users. Artists such as Rafael, Luz Casal, Soledad Jiménez, Sara Baras and Rosario have been on the Metro ‘stage’ to offer spectacles to passengers and/or initiatives such as the Flamenco Summit and the Creators Festival have been held underground to bring the latest musical trends to all publics.
