Regional Government of Madrid to modernise Alfonso XIII underground station with works amounting to 3.9 million euros

The project, included in the Modernisation Plan of underground facilities, will take 12 months to complete. The works include modernising the wall cladding, and installations and technological improvements to the platforms and access ways. The Regional Government of Madrid continues to take steps to modernise the installations on line 4, one of the oldest in the system. The regional government was notified today of the proposal to award the modernisation works of one of the stations of this line - Alfonso XIII – with a budget of 3,898,362 euros and a completion date of 12 months.

This action, included in the Modernisation Plan that Metro de Madrid is pushing through to renovate 33 of the oldest stations in the system, thanks to an investment of 89 million euros, is in addition to the works awarded in recent weeks to renovate another two stations on line 4: Esperanza, with an investment of 2,442,441 euros, and Prosperidad, with a total investment of 3,289,937 euros.

The works to be carried out on Alfonso XIII station include the replacement of the wall cladding, and the replacement of obsolete installations and technology on the platforms and their access ways by other more modern material and equipment adapted to current legislation, which will facilitate maintenance work and improve the functionality of the installations.

As part of the renovation, the drainage and sanitation network will be extended in the station with new waterproofing systems, new electricity conduits will be laid and these areas will receive new furniture. In addition to the works scheduled for these three stations on line 4, work is being done on the Modernisation Plan at other stations, including Pavones, Bilbao and Príncipe de Vergara.

In addition, the Regional Government of Madrid has also been notified of the proposed award by Metro de Madrid of works to modify the signalling equipment to renew the switches and crossings on diversions on the underground network. This action forms part of the Renovation Plan on the track and seeks to guarantee safety, availability and comfort throughout the network, replacing the current track infrastructure with the latest technologically advanced equipment.

The implementation of these modernisation works requires the modification of the signalling systems, which regulate train movements and the operability of the lines. For this reason, a contract has been signed that provides for the replacement of the switches and crossings on diversions of the Madrid underground over the next 36 months. 25 items of equipment on six lines (2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 12) are scheduled to be changed, for a sum of 3.4 million euros.


In addition, Metro de Madrid has proposed the award to the company Bombardier of the support contract for the maintenance of the CBTC driving system on lines 1 and 6 of the underground for a sum of almost 4 million euros over a period of 36 months. The contract provides for assistance in the maintenance of the CBTC technology, both on installations and on the rolling stock.

This assistance includes logistical support, as well as the resolution of incidents which, due to their complexity or nature, make the intervention of Bombardier necessary. The CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) is an advanced signalling system that allows the capacity of the transport of the line to be improved by observing the exact situation of the preceding train and the profile of the track, which is recognised as the most modern system in the world.
