Regional Government of Madrid to extend line 11 of its underground system to improve mobility for over 800,000 city residents

The Regional Government of Madrid is promoting the extension of line 11 of the Madrid underground system in order to improve the mobility options for all users of the region’s public transport system and especially the more than 800,000 people who live in the municipality of Leganés and the districts of Carabanchel, Usera, Arganzuela and Retiro.

The goal of this extension, on which the regional government has been working for a year, is to connect the stations of Plaza Elíptica (final stop on line 11) and Conde de Casal (line 6).

The project to extend a line that currently links La Fortuna (Leganés) with Plaza Elíptica started to be drawn up in July 2018. The acting Regional Councillor for Transport, Housing and Infrastructures, Rosalía Gonzalo, presented the most viable option according to the experts at the Conde de Casal station earlier today. This option involves building a section of a little over 6.3 kilometres with four new stations. The project to build the new infrastructure recently passed the public information stage.


The chosen alternative leaves Plaza Elíptica and puts a new station on line 11 of the Madrid underground system near Madrid Río, with exits to Paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza and Paseo de Yeserías.

From there, the route will run as close as possible to the current Palos de la Frontera station where it would connect with line 3 and then continue to also connect with the Atocha Renfe station (line 1, Inter-urban and High-Speed).

The extension would end at Conde de Casal (line 6), where the project presented by Rosalía Gonzalo includes building a major transport interchange that will also house the intercity bus terminals that connect the capital to the municipalities along the A-3 corridor. This is one of the alternatives that were subject to a public information process for one month so that individuals and entities could submit their opinions and make arguments.

Following the study and analysis of these contributions, a final proposal will be drawn up and presented to the Environment and Regional Planning Department. This department will then be responsible for drawing up the necessary environmental impact assessment on the project within four months.

After the environmental process, it will then be possible to award the project at a cost of more than 300 million euros, with work possibly starting in 2020.


“This project is the best evidence that the Regional Government of Madrid remains firmly committed to an increasingly more useful and comprehensive public transport network capable of becoming the best environmental ally for achieving a less polluted, cleaner and more sustainable region”, said Rosalía Gonzalo.

The regional councillor went on to add that the line 11 extension “finally responds” to long-standing demands from local residents, especially in Carabanchel but also the inhabitants of La Fortuna in Leganés.

In this regard, the acting councillor stressed that the future entry into service of this new section of the Madrid underground system will enable line 6 (the busiest on the network) to be decongested and will offer a new alternative to passengers wishing to connect with the high-speed railway from Atocha and all those entering from the A-3 corridor.
