The Community of Madrid activates a plan for Metro de Madrid and the regional road network in response to the forecast of heavy rainfall from tomorrow Thus, since yesterday, preventive measures have already begun to be implemented with the aim of minimising the possible impact of rain both on the service of the underground and the use of regional roads.

Metro’s activities include the periodic revision and cleaning of access drains, as well as the operation of rainwater pump pits, among other facilities. The underground will also check the stations’ corridors and platforms, with special emphasis on those that are usually most affected by the rain.

When the rain warnings start, the cleaning teams will be coordinated from the Central Control Centre and will take special care to keep the transit areas clean and, in particular, the platform areas used for the entry and exit of trains. Debris will also be removed from the drains and pits or grids will be installed to enable the water to be drained more quickly, if necessary.

In addition, care will be taken to ensure that the trains are always covered in all Metro depots, as far as possible.

ROAD DRAINAGE

In the case of the more than 2,500 kilometres of the road network under the jurisdiction of the Community of Madrid, the Community of Madrid has implemented a preventive plan focusing on the maintenance of drainage facilities, which had recently been reviewed in anticipation of the arrival of the Filomena storm.

Precisely due to the accumulation of snow and ice on the roads, the monitoring of the state of the road, ditches, drains and drainage works has been reinforced. In addition, staff and vehicles have been mobilised to clean up junctions and other key points on the roads.

Moreover, while the period of precipitation lasts, the vehicles that are not being used for snow removal will be used to check the road and tend to the possible incidents that the water may cause. Cleaning machines, drainage pumps and, if necessary, even snow ploughs to remove mud from the roads are ready to be used.

When carrying out all these actions, the priority will be points such as the main road network under the jurisdiction of the Community of Madrid and connections and access to hospitals, among others.
