Isabel Díaz Ayuso announces the start of the works to extend line 3 of the underground on 1 January next year

The Acting Regional President and investiture candidate to the Presidency of the Regional Government of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, today announced that the works to extend line 3 of the underground that will connect Villaverde Alto with El Casar station in Getafe will commence on 1 January 2022.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso made this announcement at the investiture plenary session in the Regional Parliament of Madrid, where she also stated that the extension will have an execution period of 24 months. The project will receive an investment of close to 112 million euros.
The Regional Government of Madrid, through the Regional Department of Transport, Mobility and Infrastructures, has already launched the public tender for the works, which will extend line 3 of the underground from Villaverde Alto to El Casar station, thus connecting it with line 12 of MetroSur and line C-3 of Cercanías-Renfe.
This ambitious project means extending line 3 of the underground by some 2.5 kilometres, providing a new alternative to enter the metropolitan area of the city of Madrid, not just for residents of Getafe, but also for the rest of the large municipalities in the south of the region, including Alcorcón, Móstoles, Fuenlabrada and Leganés.
Thanks to this extension, more than 1 million users from the south of the region will benefit from greater intermodality and connection between the different modes of transport. El Casar station in Getafe will thus become an intermodal station, which will connect lines 3 and 12 of the underground, along with the Cercanías-Renfe line that connects Aranjuez with Atocha, Sol and the north of Madrid.
The extension of the underground will, in turn, allow the different urban and intercity bus routes from Getafe to be reorganised to facilitate intermodality within the municipality itself. Accordingly, the future El Casar station will have a ground level car park with more than 500 spaces, which will be attached to the Aparca-T car park network, free of charge for those users of public transport. In addition, there will be spaces to charge electric vehicles.
This is one of the greatest challenges for this term of office which, in parallel, will help reduce the carbon footprint as citizens will use private vehicles less, and will boost quality public transport in the metropolitan area of the southern part of the region.
