More than 500,000 potential travellers will benefit in zones C1 and C2, which will now be the same price as zone B3 and cost 82 euros. This is one of the commitments the regional president announced in her investiture debate and which affects towns and villages that are farthest from the capital. The Regional Government of Madrid will have allocated more than 1.5 billion euros by the end of 2021 to subsidise 60% of the cost of public transport. There are also 20 million Public Transport Cards in the region, of which 4.4 million are personal

The President of the Regional Government of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, today presented a reduction in the monthly price of the Public Transport Card (TTP) for more than 500,000 potential users in the 129 municipalities that are farthest from the capital. This is one of the commitments she announced in her investiture debate and which will be applied as from next January, she explained at an event in the Royal Post Office to close to 100 mayors and local councillors of the beneficiary municipalities.

Beneficiary travellers of this measure, who will save as much as 200 euros per annum, are the residents of municipalities in the tariff zones C1 and C2, which will henceforth pay the same price as for zone B3. Accordingly, the more than 30,000 current users in these two zones, who currently pay 89.50 euros for their monthly card in Zone C1 and 99.30 euros in zone C2, will henceforth pay 82 euros as from 1 January 2022.

“This tariff unification is another step towards reducing distances in the region. Reaching Puerta del Sol will cost exactly the same for public transport card-holders from Rascafría as, for example, from Villanueva de la Cañada”, indicated the President of the Regional Government of Madrid, reflected in the upcoming regional budget with an investment of almost 2 billion euros.

There are almost 20 million TTPs in the region, of which 4.4 million are personal. As the regional president explained, Madrid is one of the European regions with the most affordable fares, lower than in London and Berlin, and similar to Paris, with one of the finest transport networks, thanks to the economic injection allocated to subsidise them. Furthermore, public transport fares have been frozen for the last eight years in a row.

AFFORDABLE FARES

In 2021, the Regional Government of Madrid, through the Regional Transport consortium, will have subsidised up to 60% of the total cost to public transport users, contributing more than 1.5 billion euros to the underground, the light railway, the EMT, city and intercity buses and the network of interchanges.

The regional president also claimed that the regional authority will continue with “the policy of reductions for different transport cards” and that, among others, more than 64,300 children aged between 4 and 6 that use the child’s TTP will continue to travel free on public transport.

Furthermore, more than 1.2 million young people aged from 7 to 26 will continue to benefit from a 20-euro flat rate for their monthly transport card, which enables unlimited travel throughout the region. This measure allows thousands of families to make savings of up to 1,340 euros a year on public transport.

Of the more than 1.2 million people over the age of 65 that are residents in the region, 930,000 are users of the specific TTP enabled for their travel. In addition, as from 1 January, they will enjoy a new discount, as the current 3.30 euro subsidy will rise to 6.30 euros for their monthly TTP. This will be totally free of charge as from 2023.

Other special tariffs also exist for such groups as large families, which enjoy a 20% discount in the general category and up to 50% in the special category, which more than 278,000 users have already benefitted from. Lastly, more than 22,800 people with a disability in excess of 65% have a 20% discount available to them, and in the case of a combination of the two previous conditions, they can accumulate the two discounts.
