The Regional Government of Madrid has awarded, at its meeting held this week, the contract for the works to extend Line 3 of the underground from Villaverde Alto in Madrid to El Casar, on the northeast limit of the actual city centre of Getafe, where it will connect with Line 12 (MetroSur) and with Line C-3 of the suburban railway. The forecast is for the works to build 2.5 new kilometres of track to commence in the first quarter of 2022, with an execution period of 22 months.

Seven bids were presented for this public tender, which were finally awarded to the Joint Venture AZVI-Cotodisa Obras y Servicio-Obras Subterráneas for a sum of 91.9 million euros.

El Casar station will become an intermodal interchange where two underground lines and one suburban railway line will converge, while a car park will be built above ground with 500 parking spaces, which will form part of the Aparca+T park and ride network of car parks of the regional government. According to the preliminary studies carried out by the Regional Government of Madrid, it is calculated that the number of trips could increase by around 70% at this station, with numbers reaching as many as 9,200 users a day.

The works will offer greater connectivity to Line 12 of the underground (MetroSur) – the circular line that joins up five municipalities in the south of the Region of Madrid (Getafe, Alcorcón, Móstoles, Fuenlabrada and Leganés) over its 41 kilometres, where more than 1.1 million inhabitants live. At present, the only connection with the rest of the underground network is at Puerta del Sur station (L-10).

The implementation of the new extension shall guarantee complete accessibility and mobility, with the installation of escalators and lifts between the platforms and the street.

Minor modifications may be made to the project design that are essential to adapt it to the geotechnical and hydrogeological characteristics, always guaranteeing the safety of the works.
