The Community of Madrid will increase its investment in the extension of Metro Line 11 by €17.1 million in order to minimise the environmental impact of the works, reducing the surface area occupied and the impact on the trees around the stations of Comillas, Madrid Río, Palos de la Frontera, Atocha and Conde de Casal in the Spanish capital. 

Today, the Governing Council has approved the contract derived from the modification of the construction project which contemplates changes in the location of the electricity substation, outside the Palestine Gardens, and the alteration of the earth extraction system. Changes are also being made to the machinery required to carry out the work on the five stops on this section. As a result of these measures, the number of trees felled has been reduced by more than 50% of the 1,000 originally planned. Moreover, over the next four years, the regional government will replace 14,000 tree specimens that will be placed in municipal green spaces. 

The works for the extension of Line 11 of the underground have a favourable environmental impact report from the Regional Ministry for the Environment, Agriculture and the Interior. With this investment, the Madrid government has increased the budget earmarked for the extension of this infrastructure to €517 million. The works, which started in November 2022, will take 60 months to complete.

A PROJECT CONNECTING THE ENTIRE METRO NETWORK

The Regional Ministry for Housing, Transport and Infrastructure is carrying out these actions on almost seven kilometres of the route between Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal and includes two new stations located in Comillas and Madrid Río. With this extension, a new transversal axis will be created that will decongest Line 6 by facilitating interchange with a large number of Metro lines, freeing them up and generating alternative routes for communication with the radial lines. 

It is also connected with L1 which will link with Cercanías and Media and Larga Distancia trains at Puerta de Atocha station, as well as at Palos de la Frontera with L3 and at Conde Casal, where a new interchange will be located with L6. All these stops will be fully accessible.  

The comprehensive project for this extension includes the connection of Cuatro Vientos with Valdebebas Norte and involves an extension of the Madrid underground by 33 kilometres and twenty stations that will link up with T4 at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport. The project will cross the city from south to north, making travel easier for thousands of citizens and contributing to the goal of reducing emissions by 90% by 2050 through access to smart, sustainable and efficient public transport.
