The Community of Madrid builds a new access and ten lifts at Avenida de América Metro station
Regional Minister Rodrigo visited the works, which are 50% complete and will be finished at the beginning of 2026 to improve accessibility. It will enable passengers to enter the underground directly from Calle María de Molina. The installation of the lifts will make it easier to travel to the platforms on lines 4, 6, 7 and 9. The project includes the creation of a hall and the replacement of materials with more resistant ones.
The Community of Madrid is building an access at Avenida de América Metro station together with 10 new lifts to improve the accessibility of this major regional public transport hub. This was stated by the Regional Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, during his visit today to see the progress of the works, which are 50% complete and due to be finished in early 2026.
Specifically, from that date, users will be able to enter directly from Calle María de Molina in the Spanish capital via two lifts that will connect with any of the four Madrid underground lines (L6, 4, 9 and 7). "These are two of the 10 lifts that are being installed as part of the Accessibility and Modernisation Plan being developed by the metropolitan company," Rodrigo said.
The head of Transport said that "the plan is to open the access corridors to L6 and L7 in September, and the central platform on L7 in October", which have been closed until now due to these works in which the regional government has invested some €57 million. The design, in addition to creating a 100% accessible route for the more than 40,000 passengers who use Avenida de América every day, proposes a new hall that will link up with the existing intermediate level to lines 4 and 6, and a connecting gallery with L7 and L9.
Metro has taken advantage of these works to undertake renovation work aimed at improving the waterproofing, drainage and sanitation of the infrastructure, as well as replacing some materials with others that are more resistant and efficient.
7 OUT OF 10, ACCESSIBLE FOR REDUCED MOBILITY
The metropolitan company currently has more than 550 lifts, a figure that places it at the top of the European ranking and fourth in the world. "Around 70% of stations are accessible, but we are working to increase this percentage with the aim of facilitating travel for all users, but especially for people with reduced mobility" thanks to the deployment of escalators and lifts.
In addition to Avenida de América, the railway company plans to install new lifts in Ventas, Begoña, San Bernardo, Diego de León, Alonso Martínez, Méndez Álvaro, Núñez de Balboa, Ibiza, Oporto, Duque de Pastrana, Vicente Aleixandre, O'Donnell, Manuel Becerra, Cuzco, Santiago Bernabéu, Concha Espina, Cruz del Rayo, Pío XII, Ventilla, Barrio del Pilar, Herrera Oria, Artilleros, Estrella, García Noblejas, Banco de España, Acacias, Carabanchel, Alto de Extremadura, Tetuán, Ciudad Lineal, Puente de Vallecas, Campamento and Canillejas.
