Today, the Governing Council approved the investment of €17,545,590 in the awarding of the four-year contract for the renewal of Metro de Madrid's rail track, a project divided into two phases, one comprising the northern section and the other in the south-eastern part of the network and covering 89.75 kilometres.
The goal is to remedy possible defects and wear in the guidance and running areas, i.e. at the points where the train wheel comes into contact with the rail. In addition, the Madrid-based company will renew the sections that are nearing the end of their useful life and will carry out an ultrasonic inspection of their condition.
The underground carries out preventive maintenance on these infrastructures to improve the efficiency and quality of the service. To detect this, the entire lane is checked annually, except in areas where, historically, more incidents are concentrated, and therefore a review is carried out every six months.
With this action, aluminothermic welding will be replaced by electric welding, which enables a higher degree of mechanisation, as well as a reduction in the number of incidents. The work will be carried out at night, without the need to suspend the running of any line, thus ensuring a minimum impact for passengers.
