The Community of Madrid invests 168.5 million to renovate the tracks on Metro's L6 and reduce train frequency times
The Governing Council approved two contracts today for the execution of these works as part of its automation process. New noise and vibration abatement systems will be installed to improve passenger comfort. Work on this circular line will begin next June and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. It will be carried out in two phases and there will be a free bus service as alternative travel for users.
The Community of Madrid will invest 168.5 million euros for the complete renovation of a large part of the tracks on Line 6 of the Metro. The Governing Council approved the awarding today of two contracts for undertaking modernisation work for this infrastructure, which will bring it into line with the new automatic traffic model.
This modernisation of L6 will see clear operational improvement, reducing train journey times, increasing the reliability of the facilities as well as optimising track maintenance work and costs.
The regional government will allocate 149 million to work on the main track superstructure, which currently consists of wooden sleepers on ballast and blocks on a concrete platform. These materials will be replaced by the latest technology. At the same time, the route will also be optimised, and the existing rail will be modernised as well as facilities being installed in the Ciudad Universitaria depot; these being among the actions that will take 18 months to complete.
L6 of the Madrid underground, also known as the circular line, is located under a highly settled urban area, an aspect that has been taken into account by the regional government when implementing new noise and vibration abatement systems.
This contract, which makes up the remaining 19 million of the budget and will be executed within six months, includes the necessary technology to absorb the effects of rail traffic, adapting it to the needs of the metropolitan company.
WORKS FROM JUNE TO THE END OF THE YEAR
Passenger services will be interrupted in two phases during the work. The first phase, scheduled for June to September 2025 in the southwest arc, between Moncloa and Méndez Álvaro. The second phase, from September to December, in the north-eastern section, from Moncloa to Legazpi.
During this period, free transport alternatives will be made available to cover the affected routes, and the users themselves will be consulted by means of a survey to be carried out soon by underground staff at the platform.
In the first half of the year, Line 6 recorded more than 90 million journeys, being the most used line of the entire Metro network, with an average of 400,000 passengers per day and accounting for 16% of the total number of trips made in the company.
