The Community of Madrid is investing €8.9 million in track devices for the renovation works on Line 6 of Metro, which will mean the arrival of the first automatic trains on the underground network. Today, the Governing Council has learnt about the award of the contract for the design, manufacture, supply, pre-assembly and assembly of this equipment, which enables the branching and crossing of different railway infrastructures.

The contract, with a completion period of 12 months, includes the implementation of the diagonals, turnouts and turnbuckles necessary for remodelling the track superstructure. The €2.9 million project for the south-west area, between Moncloa and Méndez Álvaro stations, includes six diagonals, a turnout and a turnbuckle.

The northeast area, from Moncloa to Legazpi, comprises eight diagonals and three bypasses with a budget of €3 million; while the area of the Ciudad Universitaria depot and the Laguna warehouse, lastly, includes 12 bypasses with a budget of €2.9 million.

These works are part of the €129 million investment being made by the regional government for the comprehensive transformation of L6, which will become the first automated line on the Madrid underground. Thanks to these actions, the most used infrastructure of the entire network, with more than 90 million trips so far this year and an average of 400,000 passengers per day, is being prepared to accommodate the new automated trains that will be in service from 2027.

During the course of the works, which are due to start in 2025, the service will be interrupted in two phases. The first will take place between June and September in the southwest arc, between Moncloa and Méndez Álvaro. In the second, from September to December, the north-eastern section, between Moncloa and Legazpi, will be affected.

Throughout this period, the Community of Madrid will provide citizens with free transport alternatives to cover the affected routes, and the metropolitan company will take into account the opinion of the users themselves through a survey to be carried out soon on the platforms.
