Today, the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, presented the excavation model that will speed up the work to extend Metro line 11. As she detailed, it involves the incorporation in early 2026 of the Mayrit TBM, "which is currently being manufactured in Germany, and which will be able to bore approximately 15 metres of tunnel per day compared to the two metres" of the traditional method that has already begun to be used.

As the president explained, Mayrit owes its name to the name the Arabs gave to the city of Madrid because of the richness of its water flows.

Today, Díaz Ayuso visited the future Comillas station, in the Carabanchel district of the Spanish capital, one of the two stations in the first phase of the project, which will also have a stop at Madrid Río and a connection with Palos de la Frontera and Atocha. The regional government's investment to carry out these works is €518 million.

"Our government firmly believes in the importance of public transport and we are immensely fortunate to have one of the best, modern, fast, clean, timely and always growing with all ages in mind, linking the whole region", stressed the president.

The works have a completion period of 42 months and consist of the construction of 6.6 kilometres of track between Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal. This is the first 33 kilometres of the overall project that will link Cuatro Vientos with Valdebebas through 20 stations, connecting strategic points such as Atocha Station or T4 of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas international airport.

With the extension of Metro Line 11, the regional government is facilitating communication from north to south for thousands of citizens, also enabling progress to be made towards the global goal of reducing emissions by 90% by 2050, thanks to intelligent, sustainable and efficient public transport.

Over 210,000 m3 of concrete, the equivalent of 84 Olympic swimming pools, and 32,000 tonnes of steel, four times the weight of the Eiffel Tower structure, will be used in the creation of this first section. In addition, more than one million cubic metres of earth will be moved, which could be used to fill two football stadiums the size of the Santiago Bernabeu.

The head of the Madrid Government announced that Metro will exceed 700 million passengers this year, the highest figure in its 105-year history, at the same time as she recalled other works that are underway to extend the underground network, such as those on Line 3 –which is about to be completed– to link Villaverde Alto to El Casar in Getafe; or the start in the first quarter of 2025 of the work to extend Line 5 to connect Alameda de Osuna with the three terminals of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport.

Díaz Ayuso also highlighted the extension of Line 9 to Los Ahijones and Los Berrocales so that they will have their own station, and the new Madrid Nuevo Norte station, which will have three stops, as well as the modernisation of the Circular (L6) with the automation of its trains, incorporating doors on the platforms for greater safety.

In addition to this, 80 new trains are currently being built to modernise the underground fleet and improve the quality of the service, which will carry 1,385 passengers per train, 17% more than the current capacity. "It is the largest renovation in the 105 years of Metro's history, with an investment that will exceed 900 million, an unprecedented action", she concluded.
