Díaz Ayuso announces the start of works on the Conde de Casal interchange and the extension of Metro Line 5 in the first quarter of 2025
The President of the Community of Madrid has taken stock of the Regional Government's management after the last Governing Council of the year. In March, the extension of L3 was inaugurated to link the stations of Villaverde Alto and El Casar (Getafe), the Spanish capital's second strategic connection with MetroSur. The comprehensive renovation of the underground L6, the Circular, will begin, automating trains
Today at the press conference following the last Governing Council of the year, the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced that work on the new Conde de Casal interchange and the extension of Metro Line 5 will begin in the first quarter of 2025. Moreover, the extension of L3, which links the Villaverde Alto and El Casar stations (MetroSur), will come into operation in the first few months.
Thus, the Conde de Casal infrastructure, a project linked to the work on L11 of the underground line, will serve the A-3 corridor, benefiting approximately 65,000 citizens by connecting with L6, the Circular, and with the city and intercity buses in the area.
The extension of Metro Line 5 from Alameda de Osuna station to terminals T1, T2 and T3 at Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas International Airport is another of the outstanding projects that the regional government will begin to implement next year. The work has a budget of €209 million and will provide Madrid's aerodrome, its 62 million users and 40,000 workers with a new direct connection to the city centre.
Likewise, in March, L3 is scheduled to open to link the Villaverde Alto and El Casar (Getafe) stations, the Spanish capital's second strategic link with MetroSur. This way, the more than one million citizens in the municipalities of Getafe, Leganés, Móstoles and Alcorcón will have a direct route to Puerta del Sol.
This infrastructure will become a neuralgic place of public transport modal interchange for citizens who will be able to connect from El Casar with Metro lines 3, the Renfe suburban train line, intercity buses 447, 448, 488 and N805, and two urban lines, as well as access to a surface car park with more than 500 parking spaces and a recharging area for electric vehicles.
Also noteworthy is the recent opening of the new Valdebebas interchange, which will serve users of the future City of Justice, the Enfermera Isabel Zendal Public Hospital and the urban developments in this increasingly expanding area of the capital. Finally, one of the most important milestones of 2024 in terms of Transport is the all-time record number of Metro de Madrid passengers, which closed the year with 700 million.
In 2025, the comprehensive renovation of Line 6 will also be undertaken, the most frequented of the entire network, with 110 million users in 2023, an average of 618,000 people on a business day. This work will enable the introduction of the automatic driving system so trains can run every two minutes and saves energy, increases flexibility and reduces trip times.
On the other hand, the regional government, through the Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM), has published the 21 preliminary drafts of the future concessions for urban and interurban bus network services in the region, as a preliminary step to the tendering process to be undertaken next year. In addition, the Community of Madrid will continue its commitment to digitalisation with the virtualisation of the Multi card and the implementation in 2025 of payment by bank card for its fleet.
