Today, the Community of Madrid has acknowledged the 60 Metro volunteers who collaborated in the recovery work in the areas affected by the flooding in Valencia, 10 of them employees of the underground's facilities maintenance area, who carried out pumping work, and another 50 who carried out cleaning work.

Today, the Regional Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, took part in the tribute to the workers who became Metro heroes after carrying out solidarity and exemplary actions on behalf of the citizens in 2024 at the metropolitan company's headquarters.

In total, 108 suburban professionals have been honoured, the 60 mentioned above and another 48 who have also excelled in specific interventions. "These men and women have gone above and beyond the call of duty, without expecting anything in return, out of a principle of social responsibility, humanity and respect for others," said Rodrigo.

During the ceremony, awards were presented to 17 train drivers and station employees, 16 security guards and inspectors from security companies, and three members of the National Police mobile brigade, whose work on the network has made it possible to help passengers in the event of sudden medical emergencies or risk situations for users. They are joined by members of other volunteer groups involving Metro workers and their families.

These interventions included assistance to a person who suffered an epileptic seizure at the Aviación Española stop (Line 10); the care of a passenger who received CPR while the emergency services arrived, and the intervention of a security guard who detained the perpetrator of a robbery until the police arrived.

The work of another employee who confronted a group of graffiti artists and prevented them from damaging a train at Arganda del Rey (L9); the action of two other workers who restrained a man with a violent attitude at Antón Martín station (L1); and the operator who prevented a run-over when he saw a passenger going down the track.

"These Metro heroes are a representation of all the professionals who are part of this great company, one of the best in the world, valued and recognised both nationally and internationally. For the regional government, you are the architects of the prestige of this public company and of the fact that, in 2024, it has broken the historical record of users with a total of 715,208,882 trips, 8% more than in 2023, surpassing even the activity prior to the pandemic", said the regional minister.
