Today, the Governing Council authorised the increase of underground staff salaries by €17.8 million in 2025. This is supported by all the trade union organisations and includes formulas that will facilitate train reinforcements at weekends, public holidays and major events. It provides for a wage increase and a reduction in annual working hours from next year. The automation of Line 6 entails a number of changes in work organisation and new categories.

The Community of Madrid renews Metro de Madrid's collective bargaining agreement, which improves service and promotes work-life balance for its 7,200 employees. Today, the Governing Council approved a €17.8 million wage increase for underground staff by 2025, as set out in the pre-agreement between the company's management and all the trade union organisations for its forthcoming entry into force until 31 December 2027.

This way, the regional government reaffirms its commitment to the Madrid underground, which recorded its all-time record number of passengers in 2024 with more than 715 million users, and to its professionals. The text that replaces the one signed 5 years ago includes a number of new developments in working conditions and organisation and, in particular, defines the new model for the automation of Line 6, planned for 2027, as well as in the future also on L8.

The comprehensive renovation of the circular line, the most heavily used of the entire network, will make it possible to reduce waiting time on the track, as well as to flexibly adapt the supply of trains, guaranteeing greater reliability and transport capacity. This system therefore entails productivity improvements, reorganisation measures and new professional categories. Thus, in the maintenance area, technicians will check the platform doors, the signalling and the automatic trains.

In addition, the Metro de Madrid agreement, which recognises the uniqueness of underground workers, includes formulas aimed at facilitating the reinforcement of the service at weekends, public holidays and major events, due to the increase in demand on these days, up to 20% more from 2019. In this sense, it also involves the promotion of remote assistance in stations with lower passenger traffic and virtual assistance in ticket vending machines.

REDUCTION OF ANNUAL WORKING HOURS FROM 2026

Regarding remuneration, the text provides for a 5% salary increase aimed at encouraging effective presence in the performance of professional activities and optimising available resources. It also changes working hours from 2026, from 1,635 to 1,620 hours per year, and reinforces the rest periods for staff related to railway traffic or with night work in maintenance tasks.

On the other hand, the partial retirement system remains in place in certain circumstances from the age of 62 and the ongoing training of professionals will be encouraged, with a commitment to the development of internal promotion. The content of the pre-agreement has been signed with all the trade union organisations represented on the Works Committee (Sindicato del Colectivo de Maquinistas de Metro, CC OO, UGT, Solidaridad Obrera, Sindicato Libre and Sindicato de Técnicos de Metro de Madrid) and includes a commitment to social peace for the duration of the agreement.

In this regard, the train drivers have shown their support for the pioneering Last Mile project, with which the regional government aims to contribute to the reduction of pollution, avoiding the surface movement of thousands of packages a day. Thanks to the tests carried out to date, the metro company has facilitated the delivery of 38,000 packages on L3 and L12 without interfering with the user experience, and is continuing to study its implementation.
