The Community of Madrid invests €16.6 million to modernise the electrical facilities at Metro's hub

The Governing Council has been informed of the proposal to award the works for this contract for the Canillejas reservoir in the Spanish capital. They will increase the safety and reliability of one of the most important areas of public transport. It houses the central workshops, depots for lines 5 and 7, the Training School and the company's logistics hub. Four new transformer stations will be built and integrated into the remote control platforms.
The Community of Madrid will invest €16.6 million in the comprehensive renovation of the electrical facilities of Metro de Madrid's Canillejas depot, the hub of this public transport system used by more than 2 million passengers every day. At its meeting today, the Governing Council heard the proposal to award the contract for these works, which, with a completion period of 48 months, will modernise the high and low voltage infrastructures to provide greater safety and reliability to one of the most important areas of the Madrid underground.
Specifically, the contract calls for the construction of four new transformer substations and the refurbishment of two existing ones, which currently supply this complex by means of an internal 15 kilovolt network. As a novelty, following this improvement, they will be integrated into the metropolitan company's remote monitoring and supervision platforms, which is a new step towards digitalisation.
Moreover, the project also includes the comprehensive upgrading of the low-voltage electrical facilities, which will include the replacement of the current lighting system with LED lighting, together with the supply and installation of electrical panels, wiring, connection boxes and sockets.
This way, the Community of Madrid is investing in the modernisation of a key unit in the operation of the network. The Canillejas depot is considered the heart of Metro de Madrid, as it houses the central workshops where the underground undertakes the long-cycle overhauls of all its trains. This space also houses the depots for lines 5 and 7, the Training School and the metropolitan company's logistics centre.
