The Community of Madrid educates more than 9,000 schoolchildren in the responsible use of the underground, twice as many as in the previous school year

These are record figures for the Aula Metro programme, which currently includes 12 free activities. The goal is to explain the importance of this means of transport in history, its technology and its significant contribution to the environment. In this edition, a new space has been opened in the Canillejas Logistics Centre with two new proposals Metro por dentro (Metro from the inside) and Profesiones con futuro (Professions with a future).

The Community of Madrid has educated a total of 9,129 schoolchildren during the 2024/2025 school year in the responsible use of the Metro, which is more than double the number of participants in the previous edition, which registered 4,000 children. This record figure has been made possible thanks to the Aula Metro educational initiative, with which the Madrid underground promotes public transport among young people through free activities aimed at all educational stages.

Through this programme, the importance of this mode of transport is presented from a historical, technological and environmental point of view. In addition, this school year the metropolitan company has opened a new site, located in the Logistics Centre of the Canillejas depot, which has joined the existing centres in Nuevos Ministerios and El Bercial.

Also, as a novelty, two new activities have been added: Metro por dentro (Metro from the inside), aimed at 5th and 6th year primary school children, which stresses the importance of logistics for the smooth running of the network, and Profesiones con futuro (Professions with a future), aimed at 3rd and 4th year Secondary and Baccalaureate children with a view to choosing their curriculum.

This educational initiative, launched in 1982, currently offers 12 free proposals that include face-to-face actions in classrooms. The programme is aimed at all levels of education, including special education, and is carried out in public, state-subsidised and private schools in the Community of Madrid, with those aimed at primary schoolchildren being the most popular, representing 72% of the participating children.

These include Conocemos Metro (Let's learn about Metro), with 2,200 students from 4th, 5th and 6th grades of primary school, and Cuidamos el planeta (Let's take care of the planet), in which 1,400 students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades of primary school took part. In addition, another 2,600 attended the Aula Metro Christmas workshop, which included a tour on the Christmas train and a magic show with references to the use of the underground.

On the other hand, 800 children from Special Education have participated in the activities Refuerzo mi autonomía (Reinforcing my autonomy) and Conocemos Metro (Let's learn about Metro). Likewise, more than 1,000 young people from secondary schools and vocational training courses have taken part in initiatives aimed at disseminating the company's history and its contribution to the region's development, through proposals such as Conocemos espacios emblemáticos de Metro (Let's learn about Metro's emblematic spaces) and Metro como referente (Metro as a reference point)

Once again this year, the underground company has also taken part in the 4ºESO+Empresa educational programme, hosting 55 students in their final year of Compulsory Secondary Education, who have been able to take part in a training visit to the company to learn about how it works and the different professional profiles that make up the company.

Interested schools can apply for information or inclusion in the programme by emailing aulametro@metromadrid.es.
