The Community of Madrid will draw up an operating plan for the future underground in Alexandria (Egypt) after Metro de Madrid reached an agreement with the Spanish engineering company Sener, which is currently working on the first phase of its construction. This collaboration will enable the application of the main design and construction criteria for the line, taking into account the expected demand and the specific characteristics of the network.

The agreement will have a duration of five months and a value of approximately €50,000. During this time, the Madrid-based metropolitan company will contribute its experience and knowledge in order to draw up a plan that guarantees the efficiency and sustainability of the new Egyptian infrastructure.

The line that will be assessed consists of 20 stations and almost 21 kilometres. It runs from the historic city centre to Abu Qir, a residential area in the north-east, and runs mostly on viaducts. The south-western end is at ground level, using the old tramway track.

This collaboration is in addition to other international Metro de Madrid projects, such as the one it is carrying out in Delhi, where it is advising the authorities on the implementation of the Last Mile freight transport project. For India's capital city, this will be the first initiative of its kind and will mark a milestone in metropolitan service logistics innovation in the South Asia-Pacific region.

Since 2014, the Madrid underground has also been collaborating with Metro de Lima on Line 2 and the L4 branch. A multidisciplinary group of experts in different fields is working there with the concessionaire to manage the five kilometres that are already in operation and to prepare for the future commissioning of the remaining 30 kilometres.

There is also a cooperation agreement with Lisbon for technical assistance in the technological modernisation of signalling on its yellow, blue and green lines. To this end, a team specialising in railway engineering from the metropolitan company is working alongside the Portuguese company, sharing its experience in the implementation of the CBTC system.

With projects such as these, Metro de Madrid continues to be an international benchmark in terms of updating its facilities and expanding the world's most important transport networks. In fact, during the first half of the year, 17 international visitors have shown their interest in various aspects of our underground. These include Metro de Santiago (Chile), Medellín, Copenhagen and other institutions such as the University of Tampa (USA) or Gustave Eiffel (France), as well as other entities such as the department of the Ministry for Transport of Qatar.
