The Community of Madrid has brought forward the opening of one of the platforms at Avenida de América Metro station, which serves line 7, closed due to the works that the underground is carrying out to install a lift in this space, which will connect with the new hall that is being built. With this measure, the regional government is improving mobility at this station, through which 190,000 people pass every day. 

From today, users of this station can now use the two platforms on line 7. The installation of this lift, which has led to the closure of the platform for two months, is part of a larger project to install ten lifts that will be operational early next year.

The Madrid underground has made a major effort to bring forward the opening to users of the last section affected by the works to complete the modernisation of the entire Avenida de América station, bringing it forward by 12 days regarding the initial planned date. Thus, once this phase is completed, the station can provide normal service to its four lines and in a few months it will be 100% accessible.

Last September, the Community of Madrid put two lifts into operation in this station, which connect Calle María de Molina on the surface with the platforms of lines 4 and 6, to which another eight lifts will be added in 2026. A global modernisation of this infrastructure is also being undertaken, including the creation of a new hall that will link with the intermediate level to the aforementioned lines and a connecting gallery with L7 and L9.  The regional government has invested close to €57 million in these actions. 

The metropolitan company is taking advantage of these works to undertake renovation work aimed at improving the waterproofing, drainage and sanitation of the infrastructure, as well as the replacement of some materials with more resistant and efficient ones.

It should be noted that Metro currently has 571 lifts in its network, a figure that places it at the top of the European ranking and fourth worldwide. This figure means that around 70% of stations are accessible to all users, regardless of their age or condition, ensuring that all users can travel independently and safely. 

In addition to Avenida de América, the metropolitan company is working on the installation of new lifts on Ventas (L2 and L5), Santiago Bernabéu (L10), Duque de Pastrana (L9), Campamento (L5), Carabanchel (L5), Tetuán (L1), Puente de Vallecas (L1), Ciudad Lineal (L5) and Canillejas (L5). Escalators are also being installed in the street-lobby section at San Blas (L7), Estrella (L9) and Prosperidad (L4) stations, which will improve mobility at these points in the network.

This is in addition to the seven lifts that were put into service at Begoña station in June this year.
