The Community of Madrid invests €123 million to provide lifts and escalators for future stations on Metro's L11 line
Today, the Governing Council authorised the tender to incorporate these facilities into the infrastructure of the first section of the line extension. The works between Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal are 35% completed, while those in Comillas and Madrid Río are at 60% and 58%, respectively. Drilling is scheduled to begin in March with the Mayrit tunnel boring machine, which is now being assembled in the Carabanchel district's Parque de Carabanchel.
Today, the Governing Council of the Community of Madrid has approved the tender for a €123.1 million contract to provide lifts, escalators and other facilities for the new Metro stations being built on the extension of Line 11. This investment, proposed by the Regional Ministry of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, is part of the works for the construction of this first section that will connect Plaza Elíptica with Conde de Casal.
Specifically, the project incorporates 29 elevators, 60 escalators, a fire protection system, catenaries and other complementary actions that are not integrated into the civil works and require independent planning.
Moreover, work on this first section, which is 6.7 kilometres long, is 35% complete. They include the construction of five stations: Comillas and Madrid Río, both newly created and already 60 and 58% completed respectively; and Atocha, Palos de la Frontera and Conde Casal, as a connection.
Thanks to this new mobility axis, the regional government will create an alternative that will avoid the need to pass through central areas of the Spanish capital and will improve links between neighbourhoods and new urban developments in a more direct way and with fewer transfers. This project will also reduce trip times and relieve congestion on other lines such as line 6, known as the Circular Line, which is the busiest of the entire network, especially on the section between Plaza Elíptica and Avenida de América. The deadline for the completion of this project, which began in November 2022, is 2027.
Moreover, from March next year, the Mayrit tunnel boring machine will be incorporated into this project, which will advance in the excavation of the tunnel at a rate of approximately 15 metres per day. This state-of-the-art machine has been at the Parque de Comillas in the Carabanchel district since mid-November for assembly. This work may continue for three months, after which the required technical and hydraulic checks will be undertaken in order to start drilling in the first quarter of 2026.
