In February, the Community of Madrid will begin work to improve accessibility at Ventilla Metro station (Line 9), with the installation of four new lifts that will directly connect the street with the platforms. The initiative will benefit its more than 10,000 daily users and responds to the request of local residents and associations.
At its meeting today, the Governing Council heard the proposal to award the contract for these works, with a completion period of 12 months and an investment of over €6.4 million. This way, Ventilla will join the rest of the metropolitan company's infrastructures that are currently being renovated in the next few days.
The lifts that connect the street and the platform facilitate the transit of passengers through the Metro network, shortening travel time by avoiding the need to pass through halls and other access areas to the track. This system, already in use in some stations, is being installed in Tetuán, Puente de Vallecas, Ciudad Lineal, Carabanchel, Canillejas and Campamento. In total, the regional government will allocate more than €25.6 million to add 19 new lifts.
Work is also being undertaken to install escalators in Prosperidad, Estrella and San Blas, with an investment of more than €3.5 million, and the modernisation and accessibility of Ventas, Avenida de América, Santiago Bernabéu and Duque de Pastrana. Through these initiatives, the metropolitan company continues to reinforce its position as one of the best underground operators in the world in this area, with 70% of its stations fully accessible. The Metro network currently has 571 elevators and 1,709 escalators.
