The Community of Madrid is making progress in the implementation of an intelligent payment system based on Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) technology, which will automatically calculate the most advantageous fare for each user. This model will facilitate access to Metro, buses and Cercanías through the direct use of bank cards, mobile phones or other digital devices, without the need to use a traditional physical card. 

This Wednesday, the Governing Council authorised the contracting of specialised technical assistance to support the Regional Transport Consortium of Madrid (CRTM) in the development and implementation of this new tool. This project is considered one of the main technological transformations of Madrid's public transport network in recent decades. 

The investment for this contract amounts to €2.7 million and will have an initial duration of three years, extendable up to a maximum of five years. The external team will be responsible for advising, supervising and monitoring the development of the initiative and ensuring compliance with deadlines and maximum operational and quality guarantees. 

The new ABT system will significantly transform the travel experience for millions of users when it goes live in the last quarter of 2027. Among its main advantages is the automatic application of the most advantageous fare according to the number of trips, eliminating the need to top up beforehand, use physical fare cards or decide in advance which type of season ticket is most convenient.

The implementation of this technology is part of a global investment of €42.7 million with which the regional government seeks to adapt Madrid's public transport to new mobility habits and to the technological standards already implemented in large capitals such as London, New York, Toronto and Singapore.
