Today, the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced that Metro de Madrid has once again broken its all-time passenger record during the first six months of the year. The underground recorded 389.6 million trips in the first half of 2026, 3.6% more than in the same period the previous year.

It does so after closing 2025 with an all-time high of 736.8 million trips, 3% more than in 2024. In this case, Line 1 was the busiest, with almost 60 million passengers, followed by the Circular (56.8 million) and Line 10 (43 million). Furthermore, Sol and Moncloa were the busiest stations, both with more than 11 million passengers recorded. 

At the Cuatro Vientos depot, during the unveiling of the first of the 48 driverless trains that will begin operating on Line 6 of the Madrid Metro from next year, the regional president praised “the public’s confidence in Metro de Madrid, which is growing every year and is undeniable”. “This is a record figure in its 107-year history,” she added, pointing out that more than 2.5 million people travel on the Metro every day in the Community of Madrid. 

In this regard, she pointed out that this is proving to be the Metro Term because, in addition to the automation of the so-called Circular line, the first extension of the network in a decade has already been completed, extending Line 3 from Villaverde to El Casar in Getafe and connecting it with Metrosur. The entire 7B line up to the Hospital del Henares has also been restored, and the Mayrit tunnel-boring machine is working on the first section of the extension to Line 11 from Plaza Elíptica to Conde de Casal, advancing by around 20 metres a day. In addition, the terminus of Line 5 is being moved from Alameda de Osuna to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, and modernisation and accessibility works are progressing at Ventas, Avenida de América and Bernabéu stations.
