The Community of Madrid is installing two new escalators at Estrella Metro station (Line 9), which will come into service at the beginning of October. The Regional Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, attended the installation of these devices today. They are situated at a new entrance that will connect the street directly to the main concourse, making it easier and quicker for passengers to get around. 

This project is in addition to the work currently being carried out at San Blas station (L7), where three further sections are being installed. Two of them will link the public thoroughfare to the passenger concourse, whilst the third will connect this intermediate level to the platforms. 

Furthermore, last July, two new escalators came into operation at Prosperidad station (L4), completing the route for passengers from the street to the platforms. Taken together, these three projects represent a public investment of 3.5 million to expand a network that already comprises 1,712, the largest in Spain. 

The installation of these devices makes it possible to navigate the differences in level between the street, the entrance halls and the platforms more quickly, comfortably and accessibly, and forms part of the regional government’s strategy to continue modernising the Madrid underground. Since 2023, the regional government has allocated more than €228 million to the installation of 65 new lifts across the network. 

Other projects of this kind that have already been completed include those at Avenida de América, where ten new lifts and a new hall have been installed, and Begoña, which has become a fully accessible station following the installation of a further seven lifts. 

Work is also currently underway to install 48 new lifts at 13 locations across the network, 15 of which will provide direct access from the street to the platforms at Tetuán, Puente de Vallecas, Ciudad Lineal, Carabanchel, Campamento and Canillejas. 

In addition to these improvements, there are the comprehensive refurbishments at Ventas, which will be completed this year with five new lifts, and at Santiago Bernabéu, where the refurbishment will be completed in 2027 with 12 panoramic lifts, 24 escalators and a floor area that will almost triple the current size. 

Work is also progressing on the projects planned for Ventilla, Duque de Pastrana and Alto de Extremadura, as part of the process to modernise Metro de Madrid and improve its accessibility.
