Díaz Ayuso announces that Metro Line 6 will run 24 hours a day on weekends
The regional president announced this measure on the first day of the State of the Region Debate, which is being held in the Assembly. The Circular will operate throughout the night and non-stop from the start of service on Friday until the end of service on Sunday. It will benefit more than 430,000 daily passengers and strengthen the network’s main intermodal hub, linking up with ten other lines, the commuter rail service and the South Coach Station.
The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced today, during the State of the Region Debate, that Metro Line 6 will operate 24 hours a day at weekends once its full automation has been completed. The Circular will remain open continuously from the start of operations on Friday until the end of the day on Sunday.
This project will improve connectivity at the main interchange hub of the Madrid underground network, which links to ten Metro lines, five interchanges, the Cercanías commuter rail network, and the South Coach Station. It will also make it easier to travel for leisure, night-time economic activity, work shifts and major events held in the capital.
This extension to operating hours will be made possible by the modernisation of the infrastructure, which will put an end to the usual closures in the early hours of Friday and Saturday mornings. As a result, the line with the highest number of passengers on the network – used by more than 430,000 people a day – will operate continuously throughout the weekend, including at night.
The comprehensive automation of Line 6 is the largest transformation project undertaken to date by Metro de Madrid. This initiative will increase transport capacity, improve the regularity of the service and enable the service to be tailored to demand in real time. As a result, the Community of Madrid will position its underground system amongst the most advanced metropolitan networks in Europe.
Although Metro de Madrid has on previous occasions extended its usual timetables to cater for major events, the continuous operation of Line 6 throughout every weekend will mark an unprecedented milestone in the network’s history.
To date, extended timetables have been introduced on an exceptional basis to facilitate mobility during major events, such as the 2010 Champions League final, World Pride 2017 and several editions of the Mad Cool festival.
The uninterrupted provision of the service on weekends will be accompanied by a reorganisation of infrastructure upkeep and maintenance work. Consequently, the work currently carried out in the early hours of Friday and Saturday will now be concentrated mainly on the night between Sunday and Monday, whilst ensuring the highest levels of safety and reliability at all times.
