To travel on Metro de Madrid you need a Public Transport Card (TTP) loaded with a valid ticket type for the journey you wish to make. More information about Card types and Cards/tickets to enter/exit Aeropuerto stations.
Tickets for travel on Metro
All passengers, before starting their journey, must be in possession of a valid transport ticket for their intended journey, which must have been validated for that journey. Children under the age of four may travel without a ticket.
Metro tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines located in stations (with the exception of the Annual Season Ticket). You can also check the balance on your ticket at these machines.
The balance of journeys for Single and 10-Journey Tickets appears on the turnstiles at Metro de Madrid stations at the time of validation. For Tourist Tickets and season tickets, when the expiration date is approaching this information appears on the screen.
Likewise, the “Public Transport Card” App has been developed by the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium to check the available balance of each ticket type. More information.

These can be used with both Personal and the Multi Public Transport Cards.
A Single Ticket, once loaded on any card, must be used on the day of purchase. If you attempt to use a Single Ticket the day after it was purchased, the turnstile will not accept it because it has expired. Single Tickets loaded from midnight until the end of service are also valid the following day until the end of the service. A Public Transport Card can hold up to 10 Single Tickets, which may be purchased all at once or separately.
For 10-Journey Tickets, One Public Transport Card can hold up to two 10-journey tickets with a maximum of 20 journeys of the same ticket type. For example, it is possible to have 20 journeys of two 10-Journey MetroSur Tickets and 20 journeys of two Metrobús Tickets on the same card. It is not possible to have 30 journeys of three 10-Journey MetroSur Tickets on a single card. Two 10-Journey Tickets can be loaded in a single purchase or two separate purchases. In order to load another 10-Journey Ticket, there may be no more than 10 journeys remaining on the card.
Airport extra charge
Passengers travelling on a Single Ticket or a 10-Journey Ticket valid for Zone A (Single Zone A and ML1, Combined Single, Metrobús 10-Journey Ticket and 10-Journey Combo Ticket) and wish to enter or exit the Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 or Aeropuerto T4 metro Stations must pay an Airport Extra Charge. If travelling on a 30-Day Season Ticket, Annual Season Ticket or Tourist Ticket, there is no extra charge.
The Airport Extra Charge, like the Single Ticket, once loaded onto any card must be used on the day of purchase. If you attempt to use it the day after it was purchased, the turnstile readers will not accept it because it has expired.
Airport Extra Charges can be loaded along with a Single or 10-Journey Ticket at these stations (Single Zone A and ML1, Single Combo Ticket, Metrobús 10-Journey Ticket and 10-Journey Combo Ticket) or at a later time. The maximum number of Airport Extra Charges that can be purchased is the same as the number of journeys available on the accompanying Single Ticket or 10-Journey Ticket.

A 30-Day Season Ticket can only be purchased with the Personal Public Transport Card. This type of ticket cannot be loaded on the Multi card.
Depending on the profile of the Personal Public Transport Card, which is determined by the age of the cardholder, a 30-Day Young Season Ticket, a 30-Day Standard Season Ticket or a 30-Day +65 Free Season Ticket may be purchased. The user has 10 days to start using it once loaded onto the card. After this, the 30-day validity period begins even if it has not been used.
Only one type of season ticket can be loaded onto the same card. Thus, for example, it is not possible to have one season ticket for Zone A and another for Zone B1 on the same card. However, the same type of season ticket can be loaded twice to the same card but it can only be loaded a second time if the user has already begun using the first one.
The 30-day Season Ticket is valid for the zone indicated on the ticket and all zones inside the perimeter of that zone, i.e., a B3 Season Ticket is also valid in zones A, B1, B2 and B3.
The 30-Day Interzonal Season Ticket is valid for the range of zones indicated on the ticket. For example, a B2-C1 Season Ticket is valid for zones B2, B3 and C1.
With a +65 Personal Public Transport Card can purchase a 30-Day E1, 30-Day E2 or 30-Day Interzonal Season Ticket valid for zones E1 and/or E2 at the same rate that applies to the holders of standard Personal Public Transport Cards.
This ticket can be purchased at Metro ticket machines, tobacconist’s and other authorised points of sale, Bankia ATMs (with some exceptions) and Renfe-Cercanías stations.
Annual season ticket
CANCELLATION OF THE SALE OF ANNUAL PASS:
The Board of Directors of the Regional Transport Consortium, at its meeting held on 28 December 2023, agreed to continue with the suspension of the sale of individual annual passes and to maintain the sale to legal entities (annual pass for companies). For these, the same discount as in 2023 shall apply.
You can continue to use your personal public transport card to top it up with 30-day passes or 10-trip tickets (Metrobus, Bonobús, etc.).

Two zones have been defined for these passes:
Zone A corresponds to the limits of this fare zone and practically coincides with the municipality of Madrid.
Zone T includes the entire geographical coverage of the Transport Season Ticket, up to zone E2.
Validity
Tickets are valid for the calendar days specified on each type of voucher from the date of first use (it does not need to coincide with the date of purchase). The validity shall be extended on existing night services until 5 am on the last valid day.
Tickets that are valid for zone A may be used on:
- Metro, on all lines, within this area. (The airport supplementary fare is not required)
- E.M.T., on all its bus lines, except the express line to the airport.
- RENFE*, for the Cercanías stations included in this area.
- Metro Ligero ML1.
Tickets that are valid for zone T may be used on the following services in addition to the above services:
- Metro, in all services. (The airport supplementary fare is not required)
- Regular passenger transport services by road, on all lines, within this zone.
- RENFE, throughout the Cercanías network.
- Metro Ligero ML2, ML3 and ML4.
(*) Tourist tickets are not valid on RENFE Operadora Regional Services.
All of the above, with the exceptions stated from time to time by the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium.
Tourist Tickets can only be loaded on Multi cards and no other ticket types can be added to the card until the Tourist Ticket has expired. This is a personal ticket, so each passenger must acquire their own ticket in order to travel 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 consecutive calendar days, starting at the time of the first validation. For cards purchased along with a Tourist Ticket, the price of the card is included in the price of the Tourist Ticket itself.
It is only possible to have one type of Tourist Ticket on a card. Thus, for example, it is not possible to have a 3-day Zone A Tourist Ticket and a 4-day Zone A Tourist Ticket. However, the same type of ticket can be loaded twice to the same card but it can only be loaded a second time if the user has already begun using the first one.
Children under the age of 11 receive a 50% discount on the purchase of a Tourist Ticket.
This ticket can be purchased at Metro ticket machines, tobacconist’s and other authorised points of sale, Bankia ATMs (with some exceptions) and Renfe-Cercanías stations.

Fare compensation for transport tickets issued by Metro de Madrid and TFM in the period during which applications for the accreditation of large family status are being processed
In accordance with Article 7.1 of Law 40/2003 of 18 November 2003 on the Protection of Large Families, the benefits granted to large families shall take effect from the date of submission of the application for recognition or renewal of the official certificate. Given that the user can only demonstrate their status as beneficiary once s/he has the corresponding certificate, the amounts paid in excess during the period between the application for recognition or renewal of official certification recognising large family status and the time when s/he can provide official proof of such status must be regularised. In this respect, regularisation will apply to:
- Tickets loaded on the passenger's personal public transport card proving large family status.
- Furthermore, these transport tickets need to have been acquired in the time between the date of application and the date of issue of the large family certificate.
The user has one month from the date of resolution of the recognition or renewal of the official large family status certificate in which to apply for regularisation. Once this period has elapsed, it is understood that the user has waived the right to regularisation.
The procedure to be followed to request compensation for transport tickets issued by Metro de Madrid and TFM is as follows:
- Single Metro Zone A
- Single MetroNorte
- Single MetroSur
- Single MetroEste
- Single TFM
- 10-trip TFM tickets
All other tickets valid for travel on Metro de Madrid are issued by the Consorcio General de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM), and passengers must go to one of its management offices to request compensation. To do so, it is necessary to make an appointment.
THE REGULARISATION PROCEDURE
There is a difference between:
- Initial applications for a large family certificate
- Renewals of a large family certificate
INITIAL APPLICATION FOR A LARGE FAMILY STATUS CERTIFICATE
The passenger needs to apply via the usual Metro de Madrid channels. At the time of application, the personal public transport card must indicate current large family status.
The refund of the difference in price between the non-discounted and the discounted fare will be made by bank transfer.
RENEWAL OF A LARGE FAMILY STATUS CERTIFICATE
In the case of renewals, the CRTM will extend the discount on the passenger's personal public transport card for a period of four months from the expiry of the current card, which is considered sufficient time to complete the renewal process. To obtain this extension, the user must go to a CRTM management office, to submit their application for the renewal of their large family certificate (*). In the event that the processing of the renewal exceeds the four months indicated above, compensation will be made in the same way as indicated in the case of initial applications.
(*) For further information, please go to the ‘Regulations’ section of the CRTM website, and then to ‘Transport Tickets’.
