Multicard

The Multicard is a non-personal, contactless, rechargeable Public Transport Card, which lasts for ten years and can be used to hold tickets.

In order to benefit from the discounts for large families or persons with disabilities of 65% or more, you need a Personal TTP.

How can you get it?

You can purchase it at:

Multi Public Transport Cards can be purchased together with the ticket of the passenger's choice. The cards can also be purchased without a ticket top-up.

The Multicard costs €2.50. In the case of cards purchased together with a Tourist ticket, the price of the card is included in the sale price of the Tourist ticket.

Which tickets can you top up?
You can top up the following tickets:

The Single and Airport Supplement tickets, once topped up to any card, need to be used on the day of purchase and are considered valid until the end of the service, not the calendar day. If you try to use them the day after they are acquired, the validators will not let them through because they are out of date.

Tickets that are not available on the Multi card:
  • 30-Day pass
  • Annual pass

To be able to purchase these tickets you need a Personal Public Transport Card.

How does it work?

To use the card, you need to top up a valid ticket for the trip you wish. Validation is mandatory at the readers marked on the access equipment of the different operators. One trip will be deducted at each validation and the remaining balance of trips will be reported using the screens of the validation equipment for Single and 10-Trips. In the case of Tourist Tickets, it shall inform of the date until which it is valid when its expiry date is approaching.

For Single and 10-Trip tickets, as many consecutive validations can be made as passengers use the service with the same card, on the sole condition that the passengers start and end the trip together. The card supports up to three different transport tickets, enabling users to make trips that are different from their usual trip. For example: MetroSur Single Ticket + Metrobus + MetroNorte 10-Trip.

There are coexistence rules to top up these tickets, as not all tickets are compatible with each other. More information on the compatibility of the different tickets.

Large families and persons with disabilities of 65% or more.

The Multicard, as it is anonymous, prevents users from benefiting from discounts for large families and persons with disabilities of 65% or more. These users need a Personal Public Transport Card in order to benefit from the established discounts.

Balance inquiry

The available balance of the Public Transport Card can be checked on the official Metro de Madrid app, at the automatic machines in the underground, Cercanías stations, transport interchanges and at authorised tobacconists.

The turnstiles at Metro de Madrid stations report the number of trips available for single and 10-trip tickets when they are validated. In the case of Tourist Tickets, it informs of the date until which it is valid when its expiry date is approaching.

The Madrid Regional Transport Consortium has also developed the Public Transport Card app to check the available balance of each topped up ticket. More information.

Inspection control

Before starting their trip, passengers need to be in possession of a valid ticket, in accordance with the trip they wish to make, which must be validated for that trip.

Throughout the trip and until reaching the exit barriers at the station of destination, passengers must keep the ticket at the disposal of any agent of the Metropolitan Railway or the inspection of the Regional Transport Consortium who may request it.

Passengers without a valid ticket are required to pay a surcharge of €80 for the service used or intended to be used. This amount is reduced by half in the case of immediate payment or payment within a maximum of fifteen business days. Payment is made to the operating company of the Metropolitan Railway.

A passenger is considered to be without a valid ticket when they are required to show it by any agent of the Metropolitan Railway or the Inspection of the Regional Transport Consortium and they:

  • show no ticket
  • show an insufficient ticket or a ticket that does not coincide with the trip they are making or have made
  • the ticket provided is not duly validated and cancelled for the trip they are making or have made
