Fare compensation for transport tickets during the processing of the accreditation of large families

In accordance with Article 7.1 of Act 40/2003 of 18 November 2003 on the Protection of Large Families, the benefits granted to large families shall take effect from the date of submission of the application for recognition or renewal of the official certificate. Given that the user can only demonstrate their status as beneficiary once s/he has the corresponding certificate, the amounts paid in excess during the period between the application for recognition or renewal of official certification recognising large family status and the time when s/he can provide official proof of such status must be regularised. In this respect, regularisation will apply to:

  • Tickets loaded on the passenger's personal public transport card proving large family status.
  • Furthermore, these transport tickets need to have been acquired in the time between the date of application and the date of issue of the large family certificate.

The user has one month from the date of resolution of the recognition or renewal of the official large family status certificate in which to apply for regularisation. Once this period has elapsed, it is understood that the user has waived the right to regularisation.

The procedure to be followed to request compensation for transport tickets issued by Metro de Madrid and TFM is as follows:

  • Single Metro Zone A
  • Single MetroNorte
  • Single MetroSur
  • Single MetroEste
  • Single TFM
  • 10-trip TFM tickets

All other tickets valid for travel on Metro de Madrid are issued by the Consorcio General de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM), and passengers must go to one of its management offices to request compensation. To do so, it is necessary to make an appointment.

Regularisation procedure

There is a difference between:

  • Initial applications for a large family certificate
  • Renewals of a large family certificate

Initial applications for a large family certificate

The passenger needs to request it by means of a complaint through the usual channels available to Metro de Madrid. At the time of the claim, the personal TTP needs to have the updated large family group.

The refund of the difference in price between the non-discounted and the discounted fare will be made by bank transfer.

Renewals of a large family certificate

In the case of renewals, the CRTM will extend the discount on the passenger's personal public transport card for a period of four months from the expiry of the current card, which is considered sufficient time to complete the renewal process. To obtain this extension, the user must go to a CRTM management office, to submit their application for the renewal of their large family certificate (*). In the event that the processing of the renewal exceeds the four months indicated above, compensation will be made in the same way as indicated in the case of initial applications.
